Urban Future Bar: An evening learning journey on how citizens shape the city
2014 November 18th, 20.00 h
Starting point: Ateliergemeinschaft Printi , Mariahilferstraße 30, Parterre, 8020 Graz
The urbanized world is growing rapidly in size, diversity and complexity. Politicians, urban planners and politicians alike are searching for solutions to make their cities smarter and more sustainable. From 18-19 November the City of Graz hosts a prestigious ‘URBAN FUTURE global conference’, featuring in vogue topics such as e-mobility, housing, energy and communications.
Missing in Action: the Citizen!
But where are the citizens? Amidst the urgency of tough problems and grand promises of technology it’s easy to forget the obvious: Urban futures cannot thrive without an enabling environment for citizen engagement. But how does that work in practice? How can citizens be partners in co-shaping the future of their cities? How can top-down meet bottom up? What are some of the paradoxes and dilemmas? What can we learn from practices emerging around the world?
These questions are urgent, important, yet largely absent from the conference. Therefore, we are organizing a complementary programme on how citizens shape the city.
A LEARNING Journey – www.urban-future-bar.at
After a day of talking, we invite you – conference delegates, to meet active citizens, social practitioners, cultural entrepreneurs and their organizations on a learning journey through the creative heart of Graz’ rich civil society.
We start at Printi, a co-working and creation studio in the Lendviertel, for a short kick-off discussion at 20.00 h. We will then split up into groups and explore our questions by working on real-life cases that will be presented to you at various civil society hotspots in downtown Graz. At 22.00 we’ll reconvene in the ‘Kunsthaus’ to discuss our findings and end the evening with a party at the Urban Future Bar.
